Infants, older adults, and individuals with impaired immune systems are believed to be at heightened risk for the virus.

Despite the growing concerns, both the Chinese government and the World Health Organization (WHO) have yet to declare an emergency, noting that the situation is being closely monitored.

The uptick in cases occurs during the winter months, a time when respiratory illnesses are usually on the rise.
