Greenland's geographic position makes it a pivotal asset in America’s security framework. Located in North America, its proximity to the U.S. and Canada enhances its strategic importance. For decades, the U.S. has maintained a military presence in Greenland, most notably at Thule Air Base. This installation is a key component of America’s early-warning radar and satellite tracking systems, safeguarding the homeland.
Waltz emphasized the growing significance of Greenland as the Arctic region becomes increasingly central to national security, energy, and economic strategies. “Russia is positioning itself as the dominant power in the Arctic with over 60 icebreakers, including some nuclear-powered vessels,” Waltz stated, as quoted by Reuters. “Meanwhile, the U.S. has only two, one of which recently caught fire.”
He further highlighted the competition for Arctic resources, saying, “This isn’t just about geography; it’s about critical minerals, natural resources, and energy opportunities. As polar ice caps recede, China is aggressively expanding its presence in the Arctic by building icebreakers. This is a matter of oil, gas, and, ultimately, our national security.”
Trump, who will assume office on January 20, has not ruled out employing military or economic means to acquire Greenland. This follows his previous effort during his first term, when he proposed purchasing the island—a suggestion firmly rejected by Denmark. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has also reiterated that the island is not for sale.
Despite this, Greenland’s government acknowledges the shifting geopolitical realities in the Arctic and has expressed openness to working with the incoming Trump administration and NATO allies to ensure regional security and stability.
Greenland’s strategic value extends beyond its resources. As an integral part of NATO through Denmark’s membership, it lies on the shortest route between Europe and North America. The island plays a vital role in the U.S. military’s ballistic missile early-warning system, underscoring its importance in transatlantic defense and security.
