Speed Darlington sues N300M Lawsuit Against IGP Over Burna Boy concerns

Disputed Nigerian performer Speed Darlington has sued the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over claims of illegal detention. The arrest and detention of Speed Darlington were triggered by statements he made concerning fellow artist Burna Boy, which led to claims of defamation and online stalking. Although the Federal High Court in Abuja approved his bail on December 23, 2024, he was not released from police custody.

Darlington’s lawyer, in a video shared online, accused Burna Boy of using his influence to keep the singer in detention longer. On January 6, 2025, however, the court ordered his prompt release.

Shortly after regaining his freedom, the singer filed a ?300 million lawsuit against the IGP, citing violations of his fundamental rights.

A hearing on the lawsuit has been slated for January 13, 2025, by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court’s ruling followed a plea for an adjournment by Darlington’s attorney, Abubakar Marshal, to allow the police’s lawyer, Garba Audu, adequate time to review and address the suit.
