Amazon Rainforest, 1538. King Carlos V of Spain and I of Germany dispatches a group of Spanish soldiers to the New World to seek out Teziutlan, a fabled city said to be made entirely of gold, with the intent of claiming it for the Spanish Empire.
Stranded deep within the rainforest and cut off from any support, the soldiers must contend not only with hostile indigenous tribes but also with growing tensions among themselves, fueled by rivalries based on their different places of origin. The expedition is led by the aging Don Gonzalo, who is married to the young Doña Ana. Gonzalo's failing health puts Ana in a precarious situation, as she becomes the object of desire for both Alférez Gorriamendi, Gonzalo's trusted lieutenant, and the soldier Martín Dávila.
