The Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has charged Russia with escalating its strikes on Ukraine, leading to considerable losses and destruction. In a message on his verified X account, Zelenskyy disclosed that during the initial three days of the new year, Russian military forces fired over 300 assault drones and around 20 missiles, including ballistic ones, aimed at Ukrainian towns and settlements.
"Although a large portion of these threats were intercepted or neutralized by our forces using electronic warfare systems, there have still been casualties," Zelenskyy stated. "Unfortunately, these attacks have resulted in loss of life and injuries. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who perished."
Zelenskyy also mentioned that Russian guided aerial bombs continue to strike Ukrainian positions daily. He described the ongoing assault as an act of "Russian terror" and emphasized the need for Ukraine and its allies to remain committed to strengthening air defense systems. This includes bolstering capabilities with Grom Patriot systems and mobile fire groups.
"We must continue to replenish our stock of air defense missiles and enhance the effectiveness of mobile fire groups," Zelenskyy said. "I am deeply grateful to all our partners who are supporting us in this effort."
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is preparing for key meetings and negotiations next week aimed at further improving the country's air defense capabilities, with a preliminary schedule already in place.
In related news, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed a willingness to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to discuss the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Putin, when asked about a potential peace deal, said he was open to dialogue. "I haven't spoken with Trump in over four years, but if a meeting happens, we’ll have much to discuss," Putin said. "Russia is ready for negotiations and compromises."
Despite these diplomatic overtures, tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to rise, with little sign of a resolution in the near future.
