This significant achievement was disclosed at the 55th Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, with 16,590 students being conferred first degrees and diplomas throughout the three-day event.
Out of the graduates, 9,865 students were awarded first degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 obtained postgraduate degrees. Moreover, 66 students earned their degrees from the UNILAG Business School (ULBS).
The list of 18 exceptional first-class graduates features: Feranmi Abiola, Ahuruele Akani, Oyindamola Arikawe, Ifedayo Ayilaran, Demiladeogo Bankole, Olaide Bankole, Eniola Daramola, Faith Enang, Temiloluwa Igbinlade, Joy Imanah, Ifeoma Iwelunmor, Chelsea Jegede, Opeyemi Kareem, Eunice Obidi, Frances Odogu, Mofesola Olanrewaju, Funmilola Onabanjo, and Peace Onuoha.
The university commended the students for their impressive academic success, praising their effort, dedication, and resilience.
While sharing their experiences, some of the graduates reflected on their personal journeys. Peace Onuoha revealed that she had originally set her sights on studying law, but motivated herself to excel in Mass Communication while balancing various jobs and internships.
Temiloluwa Igbinlade reflected on the obstacles she faced in transitioning from secondary school to university while handling several commitments, citing her faith and resolve as essential to her success.
Eunice Obidi attributed her success to discipline, effective time management, and her ability to prioritize her academic work. Other notable academic achievements included Christian Uwagwu, who was the best graduating student from the Faculty of Education with a CGPA of 4.78, and Ibrahim Sefiu, the best graduate from the Faculty of Social Sciences with a CGPA of 4.82.
During her remarks, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, praised the university for its groundbreaking advancements in infrastructure, innovation, and academic excellence. She highlighted the founding of the MED-AFRICA GMP Laboratory, the first of its kind in West Africa, aimed at conducting advanced HIV prevention research within the Faculty of Pharmacy.
The Vice-Chancellor also pointed out the creation of the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development, and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS), a World Bank-supported program aimed at developing native medicinal plants.
UNILAG’s pledge to sustainability was reinforced with the unveiling of the Green Air Initiative, which introduces eight electric buses for staff and student transportation on campus.
She Further praised significant contributions, including Tunde Fanimokun's N14.5 billion pledge for hostel and research development, in addition to the ongoing projects funded by the Lagos State Government, all of which are driving the university's continuous growth.
